This tournament also has a team component, in that players from the same school can combine their best scores (top five for elementary, top four for secondary) towards a school trophy.  The elementary trophy was won by Nightingale school with 16.5 points, ahead of OLPH.  Alpha Secondary from Burnaby won the secondary trophy with 8 points, John Oliver was second.

Many thanks to those who helped out, including Katherine Davies, Elizabeth Towers, Andrei Botez, and Gabi Gaciu; the TD was Stephen Wright.

CIUDAD DE DOS HERMANAS

Now in its seventh year, this open on-line tournament took place March 17-25 via the facilities of the Internet Chess Club.  Entry to the event was free, including a complimentary 7-day ICC account for those who did not already possess one.  Two qualifying sections per day were held on the first six days of the tournament (March 17-22), followed by a 32-player knockout final.  The qualifying sections were held as 12-round Swisses, and players were allowed to enter as many sections as they wished.  All games were played at a time control of 4 minutes plus a 1 second increment per move.

The tournament attracted over two thousand entries, including a number from Canada.  As far as I can tell there were two participants from B.C., Jonathan Berry ("tiq") and Brad Booker ("Bythebook") - my apologies if I missed anyone else.  Their results were as follows:

          Section     Score       Place

tiq         17A        7.5        46/381
            20B        7.0        49/281
            21A        7.5        45/347

Bythebook   18B        7.5        40/286
            21B        6.0        102/294

The final 32 players included 23 GMs, with 11 players rated over 2600.  The eventual winner was German GM Fabian Doettling, who won 1800 Euros for his efforts, ahead of such luminaries as Baadur Jobava, Bu Xiangzhi, Tigran Petrosian (no, a different one), Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Magnus Carlsen, Sergei Movsesian, Gata Kamsky, Hikaru Nakamura, and Eljanov Pavel.

NORTH SHORE OPEN by Vas Sladek

There was a decent twenty player turnout for the North Shore Open.  A booking problem forced the organizers to schedule three rounds for Saturday.

BC junior star Louie Jiang won the event with 4/4 and will now enjoy a full year of fun with his new ICC membership; four players tied for second.  Louie had some help in round four when top-ranked Eduardo Moura pressed for a win and blundered by exchanging his light bishop.  Eduardo considers it his worst-ever blunder!?

Arik Milner collected new chess pieces from Chess First! Enterprises, www.chessfirst.com  for winning top junior.  Thank you to sponsors Schlockbuster, North Shore's alternative movie rental place, and ICC, www.chessclub.com.  Joe Oszvald directed.  Event pictures are posted under 'Picture Gallery' on www.chessfirst.com.
